Red Sangria

Red SangriaNothing says summer like s-a-n-g-r-i-a!

While at the Italian market yesterday I picked up red wine to make some.  I had to look up this delicious drink’s origin because I wasn’t sure if it is Italian or Spanish.

Turns out we owe it to Spain.  Heck, I say we owe everything to the Italians, Spanish and French for making food and drink so divine!

If you’ve never made sangria it’s super easy and the perfect summer punch.

It normally consists of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener, and a touch of brandy.  The fruits are chopped or sliced such as orange, lemon, lime, apple, peach, melon, berries, pineapple, grape, kiwi and mango.  To avoid a bitter aftertaste, peel the fruit as well.  A sweetener such as honey, sugar, simple syrup, orange juice is perfect.  Another nice touch is sparkling water or 7 Up.

Red Sangria

2 bottles chilled red wine

1 cup brandy

1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

1/4 cup sugar

2 oranges cut into thin rounds

2 Myer lemons cut into thin rounds

3 Key limes cut into thin rounds

2 apples cored and cubed

2 cups sparkling water or 7 Up (use less sugar if you add 7 Up)

Mix all ingredients except for the carbonated sodas.  Leave for several hours or overnight in the fridge to allow the flavors to blend.  Add ice and carbonation just before serving.  No need to wait until 5 for this drink!
