Happy Summer Solstice

Summer is special.

Today we celebrate the longest day and shortest night of the year.  It’s the perfect time to acknowledge the abundance of nature and the blossoming of all things.  Being in Albania has made it easy for me to take the long, lazy days and soak up the sun.  A much deeper connection to nature and her natural cycles has been my gift these days.

Western culture often frowns upon time off, afternoon naps and taking it easy, but I now understand that only stems from our inability to trust that we are taken care of.  If we believe we must do it all, life becomes a burden, we feel guilt about resting and before you know it we are overwhelmed and discouraged.

Planting a garden has offered valuable lessons.

We got the pots, planted the seeds, placed them in the sun, watered them, and waited for nature to its magic.  Fussing over them, digging them up or replanting them every day will not deliver fruit any faster, in fact, it will delay the process.  The take away is, after we’ve done our part we must leave space for the Universe to do its part.

As summer reaches its zenith, why not take some time to play?

Revel in the joy that summer is.

Go for a walk.

Smell the fragrant flowers.

Watch the sunset.

Eat the sweet fruit.

Have a bonfire.

Burn incense.

Stay up all night.

Receive the gifts of the season!

p.s. If there are typos, spelling or grammar mistakes in this post don’t worry about.  Those are the kinds of things I’ve worried about for FAR too long.  It’s time to just get it out and who cares if it’s not perfect, it’s from the heart!

  1. I have always taken note of the longest day of the year, but even more so this year. I will have to make extra efforts to enjoy every day, for some reason this year I am not wanting to head back to the shorter days :-),, more so than normal.
I want to be somewhere else by this fall/winter :-)
